Speak for God…Our Fourth Value

Speak for God…Our Fourth Value

"The Prophetic Calling of the Church"

God speaking to and through mankind represents the life-connection between heaven and earth. The New Testament Church was birthed by and saturated in prophetic utterance. As we pursue our fourth value of “Speaking for God”, the scripture table below will help us see God’s heart for prophecy.

(All emphasis added)

Prophesy: OT-naba' to prophesy,i.e. speak (or sing.) by inspiration (in prediction or simple discourse)

NT-propheteuo to foretell events, divine, speak under inspiration, exercise the prophetic office.

Prophesy: Inspired words revealing God’s will for the PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.

PSA 33:6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. [NIV]

HEB 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. [NIV]

All words have CREATIVE POWER.

If it has happened, it has been spoken.

If it is happening, it has been spoken.

If it is to happen, it must be spoken.

NUM 11:29 But Moses replied, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the LORD'S people were prophets and that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!"  (See Joel 2:28)

ACT 2:17 "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

1CO 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. [NIV]

In the Old Testament, only specially anointed persons could speak for God. GOD’S heart is that ALL WOULD prophesy.

1SA 10:6 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person.  (See vs. 5-13)

NOTE: Prophetic ministry was restricted to a company of prophets who were trained in schools for prophets.

REV 19:10  At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." [NIV]

The prophetic spirit TRANSFORMS a person into a VESSEL/INSTRUMENT of the Lord.

Prophecy reveals the life, message and character of Jesus Christ.

1SA 28:15 Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" "I am in great distress," Saul said. "The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do." 16 Samuel said, "Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy.

EZE 13:3 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the foolish prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing! 4 Your prophets, O Israel, are like jackals among ruins. 5 You have not gone up to the breaks in the wall to repair it for the house of Israel so that it will stand firm in the battle on the day of the LORD.

The prophetic spirit ministers often in the context of SPIRITUAL WARFARE. The most serious charge the Lord brought against the false prophets of Israel was that they had left the “wall” (battle positions) while the battle raged. The true prophet calls the church up to the wall of spiritual warfare. Yes, the Bride wears combat boots.

1KI 16:31  He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. [NIV]

The enemy of the legitimate prophetic ministry is the SPIRIT OF JEZEBEL.

  1. IDOL WORSHIP-Consumed by worldliness.
  2. IMMORALITY-Despises or de-values holiness.
  3. CARNAL LEADERSHIP FALSE ANOINTING-Mixes the carnal with the spiritual.

1KI 18:4  While Jezebel was killing off the LORD'S prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.) [NIV]

1TH 5:19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

As the world and worldly church attempt to extinguish the prophetic voice in favor of political correctness and pragmatism, the Church must preserve its zeal for prophetic fire…testing without rejecting.

MAT 7:22   Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy* in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'

Prophesying is an expected activity of those aligned with Jesus UNTIL the “day of the Lord”.

MAT 26:67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"

Prophesying was expected as a validation of Messiah by the Jewish leaders.

ACT 2:17-18  "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18  Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

1CO 1:5  For in him you have been enriched in every way - in all your speaking and in all your knowledge -

6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you. 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Prophesying is one of the validating signs of the outpouring of H.S. in these “last days”. The local Church would now become a school of prophetic ministry realizing God’s heart for all to be prophetic. Prophetic activity not only birthed the church, but was meant to sustain it until the return of Christ for His Bride. Indeed, we are to be speaking prophetically until “the end”.

1CO 12:1  Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. 2  You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3  Therefore I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. 4  There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6  There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

An often asked question concerning the operation of prophetic gifts during a church service is, “Is this of God, man, or the devil?” Paul does not concern himself with the source of the utterances in Chps. 12-14, but rather whether or not they edify. The question should be, “Is this edifying, timely and fitting.”

1CO 13:9  For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

10  but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.

“Perfection”…the state when spiritual gifts, which are perfecting instruments, are no long necessary. Prophesying will be occurring until this perfection is realized.

1CO 14:1  Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy (that ye may prophesy-KJV)

1CO 14:5  I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

A narrow point… prophesying is more valuable in the assembly because it does not require interpretation. Note: The “tongues” referred to IS NOT known languages (the sign of Acts 2) but rather the supernatural speech of vs. 2-4 –The prayer language referred to in Ro. 8:26-27; Jude 20.

1CO 14:31  For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.

All Spirit-inspired verbal expression results in “instruction” and “encouragement”. Note that this ministry comes from the assembled believers and not only from those holding “office”. Prophetic utterance is not restricted to an elite group but rather the broad base of the Church.

1CO 14:39  Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

“Eager”…the church and church leaders need to warm up to the prospect of many people prophesying.

REV 11:3  And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth."  REV 11:8  Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified.

Note the two primary opponents to prophetic ministry in the very last days…Sodom (Sin against God’s natural order [Rom. 1]) and Egypt (the temptation to go “back” after being delivered). It is “natural” for someone filled with the Holy Spirit to prophesy and the Church must resist the temptation to go back to a place where they do not speak for God.

ROM 12:6  We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

“…let him…” This admonishment suggests no dispensation or time limit but rather assumes prophesying to be a regular gift administration in the NT church.

1CO 14:24  But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all,

“everybody” speaks of the “whole bunch”…prophetic activity by many. “Prophesying is a visible manifestation of the ministry of the Holy Spirit (SEE Joh. 16:8).

1CO 14:29  Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. [NIV]

This limit does not address the entire meeting but rather the flow of the prophetic ministry, e.g. prophesy…examine…prophesy. The “others” of this verse are the “everybody” of v. 24.

-LUK 1:67  His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

-ACT 19:6  When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

Prophetic utterance—whether private or public, corporate or individual---is the most common occurring validation of the Presence of God.

1TH 5:19  Quench not the Spirit. 20  Despise not prophesyings. 21  Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

The “fire” of God is “prophesying.” Do not diminish or devalue this activity. Test it, but do not forbid it. (See Jer. 20:9)
